What happened to my daughter?

In a recent conversation with the parent of a Crossfit Teen girl, a mother shared with me some recent and significant changes she had noticed in her daughter lately.

This young girl is the daughter of box owners, so CrossFit has been in her life for a long time. She has always enjoyed CrossFit, but it wasn’t necessarily a passion for her like it was for her sister. However, in recent weeks she seems to have found a new love for the sport. She also started dedicating more time to her running- a sport she learned she was very good at.

This caused her parents to raise their eyebrows, but not as much as the changes that came outside of athletics. Suddenly this girl was doing dishes without being asked to, helping out around home, and keeping her room clean. She was no longer picking fights with her sister, and when the occasional spat did happen, she was quick to apologize and move on.

You’ve been acting different lately, mom prodded. What gives?

The CrossFit Games, the daughter responded.

The girl went on to explain how her experience of being out at the Games in California this summer really inspired her to be better. Being surrounded by athletes and individuals all week long whose goal was to always strive to be their best -in all aspects of life- motivated her to do the same. She realized it’s not enough to do your best on the field, it has to happen at home and at school as well.

This lesson happened indirectly and certainly wasn’t something her parents expected to happen, but its impact is being felt throughout the entire family. CrossFit is amazing like that. CrossFit brings together individuals from all walks of life that share one major trait in common- they all want to be better today than they were yesterday.

These are the people I want to surround my future children with, and they are the people that turned this young girl’s life in a positive direction. No parent could hope for better role models.”
