DFL is always better than a DNS
By: Joey W.
Dead F***ing Last, nobody likes to lose, but coming in last place is a horrible feeling. Coming up short in a race, competition, or game happens to everyone, but not winning is a far cry from Dead Last. Recently, I was given an entry to Fittest of Roseville by another athlete that can’t make it due to conflicting commitments. I accepted the entry without giving it much thought and kinda blew it off. Since then I have spent some time thinking about it and I have to admit, I am a little scared. Scared of being DFL.
Fittest of Roseville? I am not even close to fittest at our box; for that matter, I am not even the fittest at the time slot I usually work out at. How I am supposed to compete against 20 or 30 other athletes that have a legitimate chance to actually win? I have been going back and forth the past couple of days deciding whether or not I am going to actually go through with competing. Breaking one of your bones wouldn’t hurt that bad… Right? A well timed 79lb Kettlebell drop, BAM!!!!!, no more competition.
As the “Herman’s Head” episode played in my head, it went a little like this: (For you kids, Herman’s Head is an old sitcom. Google it.)
Why are you scared to come in last?
“There are going to be people there laughing and snickering at me struggling with “light” weight.”
Why does that matter?
“Because it’s embarrassing.”
Why? Who is making you feel embarrassed, people from the box?
“Uhm, no way. Everyone from the box will be super supportive even if I am struggling, actually probably even more supportive if I am struggling.”
Then who then?
“I guess the other people watching “The Fittest of Roseville” compete.”
You mean the people on the sideline WATCHING the competition? The people not actually DOING the competition?
“When you say it that way, it seems pretty silly.”
Am I going to win Fittest of Roseville? Not a chance! Am I going to get DFL? Maybe. Will it suck coming in last? Yeah a little bit. In the grand scheme of things does it matter? NOT ONE BIT. I will continue to work out and get faster, stronger and more mobile so I can enjoy the things in my life that really matter. I will give it my best effort and coming in DFL is ALWAYS better than a Did Not Start.
