Run 800 meters
30 Pull-ups
115 pound Front squat, 30 reps
30 Toes-to-bar
115 pound Power clean, 30 reps

Do you enter the gym with worry?

Living with a cluttered mind, obsessing about the past or worrying about the future, is the process of setting yourself up to be defeated. If you spend time worrying about wods, worrying about certain moves in the wod, worrying about how painful the workout will feel, what other people will think of you, or what your score might be, etc., then you are missing the opportunity to empty your mind; to focus on the moment and the movement at hand; to truly enjoy your workout and perform your best.

Breathe and enjoy your workout, enjoy learning new moves and challenging yourself. Remove Quit from your vocabulary and worry from your thoughts. Today’s workout is to complete task to completion as fast as possible, one rep / one task at a time, (one grain of sand at a time. See the story below.)

Dale Carnegie relayed this advice about focusing on one task at a time:

“I want you to think of your life as an hourglass. You know there are thousands of grains of sand in the top of the hourglass; and they all pass slowly and evenly through the narrow neck in the middle. Nothing you or I could do would make more than one grain of sand pass through this narrow neck without impairing the hourglass. You and I and everyone else are like this hourglass. When we start in the morning, there are hundreds of tasks which we feel that we must accomplish that day, but if we do not take them one at a time and let them pass through the day slowly and evenly, as do the grains of sand passing through the narrow neck of the hourglass, then we are bound to break our own physical or mental structure.”

Sifu Singh offers a challenge, spend 5 minutes a day to focus on the present moment using these three drills:

1) Thought Catching: try to catch your thoughts, to hold onto one thought for longer moments of presence.

2) Master the breath, watch the breadth going into your belly and listen for the sound as you breathe out.

3) Practice the A-U-M Drill. AUM contains all octaves of all sound

  1. Ooh I like this idea of shifting focus! Breathing and allowing myself to slow down for even just a moment helps, but ultimately the biggest help in focusing my thoughts is realizing my purpose!
